‘Kayang-kaya rin namin ‘yan!’, say top women drivers, riders on Grab and MOVE IT

0

Grab Philippines and partner motorcycle taxi company MOVE IT recognized their top female driver- and delivery-partners on Sunday, March 17, at the Babae Ako, Babiyahe Ako: Women’s Month Event. Recognized for their exemplary performance, high order and ride completion, and positive customer rating, the awardees stand as paragons of female excellence on the road.

Among the awardees is Veronica Arabe, a 66-year-old GrabTaxi driver-partner from Baguio City. “Bilang isang single parent, napakalaki po nang nabago sa aking buhay buhat noong ako ay nag-GrabTaxi. Isa po sa mga pinakamahalagang naidulot sa akin ng GrabTaxi ay ang pagpapatapos ko ng aking tatlong anak sa kolehiyo. Blessing po talaga ito sa aming mag-anak,” shares Arabe. Having started on the Grab platform in 2019, Arabe shares that Grab has made her more confident in steering the wheel daily, traversing roads safely and worry-free as she relies on features such as passenger identification, GrabMaps, and Share-Your-Ride.

Joining Arabe in the roster of women driver honorees is the youngest GrabCar driver-partner in Iloilo City – 22-year-old Arianne Hinara Claire Geguera. Having just finished her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Criminology at the St. Therese MTC- Colleges, Geguera immediately joined GrabCar as she prepares for the next chapter in her career. “After graduation, sumali po ako agad sa GrabCar para maging driver-partner. Ito po ay para makapag-ipon ako pang-review at board exam. Nagiging stepping stone ko po ang Grab sa pag-fulfill po ng aking pangarap na maging parte ng Tri-Bureau.” Geguera shares she appreciates the flexibility of time being a GrabCar driver. Being her own boss, she gets to balance her own time as she allots some days for her board exam review.

The top two-wheel women drivers also took center stage during the event, and one of them is Sheryl Barrantes from MOVE IT. Barrantes reveals that even though she has been with MOVE IT for just under a year, she has already seen  how she is able to achieve optimal earnings on the moto-taxi platform, which she uses to support her family. “Ang ganda po ng kita ko sa MOVE IT. Dito ko po kinukuha ang pang-dialysis ng aking tatay at ang pangangailangan naming sa araw-araw. Ang mga kagaya ko pong female MOVE IT riders na nandirito ngayon ang patunay na ang kalsada at ang pangraride-hailing ay di lamang para sa mga kalalakihan.”

Hailing from different backgrounds yet these brave, dedicated female drivers and riders share a loud and clear call for all current and aspiring women Ate Grab and Ate MOVE IT: “Kayang-kaya rin namin ‘yan!”. Besides the awardees, thousands other women drivers from all over the Philippines flocked to the Metro Tent Convention Center in Pasig as the leading superapp and the homegrown moto-taxi company reiterated their commitment to creating inclusive livelihood opportunities for every Filipino – shaping a more gender-neutral transportation sector.

Grab Philippines, together with MOVE IT, has recently rolled out a comprehensive Women Program under the social-upliftment campaign GrabAsenso. The key facets of the program include a series of trainings on topics like vehicle maintenance, first aid, and preventive servicing co-facilitated with agencies TESDA, MMDA and Philippine Commission on Women. The leading superapp has also officially activated its Women Preference Toggle – a new tech feature on the Grab driver app that is exclusive to women driver-partners. The Women Preference Toggle prioritizes the pairing of women drivers with female passengers, singinifcantly increasing the confidence of driver-partners in safely plying the roads of the metro.

Globe Group celebrates Women’s Month with spotlight on new generation of female leaders

0

As the Philippines observes National Women’s Month, the Globe Group celebrates the remarkable rise of female leaders within its ranks, emphasizing a commitment to gender equality and leadership diversity.

The Globe Group continues to be recognized as a hub of excellence for women, with female employees making up 44% of its workforce and holding 53% of executive positions within the organization.

This achievement is particularly significant given the 2022 Global Gender Gap report, which recognized the country as the leader in female representation in the boardroom in the Asia-Pacific region with a 41% rate.

The Globe Group’s initiatives go beyond numbers, concentrating on fostering and motivating women leaders to not only succeed in their respective areas but also set the stage for the future generation.

“The success of Globe lies in the diversity and dynamism of our leaders. Our female leaders, in particular, embody the values and vision that drive us forward,” said Ernest Cu, Globe Group President and CEO.

This Women’s Month, the Globe Group highlights the ascent of three female leaders who combine their professional pursuits with personal advocacies, driving forward innovations in technology. Their diverse backgrounds and shared passion for excellence exemplify the dynamic and inclusive culture at their respective companies.

Susana Beatriz “Beia” Latay, the newly appointed CEO of KonsultaMD, brings her vision of accessible telehealth services into reality, stressing the importance of informed healthcare decisions. With an illustrious career that includes leading investments in Ayala Healthcare Holdings Inc., she aims to position KonsultaMD as a key player in the healthcare sector.

“Our goal is to serve as a dependable ally throughout our users’ healthcare experiences, particularly in moments when the complexity of navigating the healthcare system seems daunting,” said Latay.

On the other hand, Joan Peñaflorida began her journey at Yondu as a consultant and has been at its helm since 2014. Under her guidance, Yondu has flourished into a premier IT solutions provider, equipping businesses with cutting-edge technological solutions.

“At Yondu, we believe in harnessing the power of technology not just to drive business forward, but to create an environment where talent thrives and hard work is recognized. I am proud to lead a team that is as dedicated to innovation as it is to nurturing a supportive and engaging workplace,” she said.

In 2019, Peñaflorida was honored with the Asia CEO Awards’ Circle of Excellence for her impactful leadership and innovation. In the same year, she was also nominated as EY Entrepreneur of the Year, which is a testament to her forward-thinking approach and leadership.

Meanwhile, Irish Salandanan-Almeida, Globe’s Chief Privacy Officer, leads the company’s efforts in data privacy. Her leadership in promoting privacy awareness reflects a dedication to enabling individuals with the knowledge to protect themselves online, where threats and risks thrive.

“In a world where many of our daily transactions and interactions are online, safeguarding privacy becomes not just a responsibility but a mission. At Globe, we are committed to setting the gold standard for data protection and empowering our customers and employees with the knowledge and tools to secure their information. This commitment is deeply personal to me, especially as a mother striving to create a safer digital future for all our children,” she shared.

The Globe Group remains dedicated to uplifting Filipino lives through innovative solutions, with women leaders at the helm steering the company towards a brighter and more inclusive future.

What Lawyers can Expect from Accredited MCLE Providers in PH

0

Filipino law practitioners, just like their counterparts in many countries across the globe, are required by no less than the Supreme Court to undergo continuing legal education.

Now on its eighth compliance period, the mandatory continuing legal education (MCLE) program keeps every lawyer abreast of legal developments. It also elevates the national standards of the profession, helps improve justice administration, and enables the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) to “discharge its public responsibility more effectively.”

Bar Matter No. 850 identifies the purpose of MCLE—to ensure that throughout their career, IBP members will remain updated about law and jurisprudence, will keep the ethics of their profession, and will help enhance the standards of the practice.

Only 25 accredited MCLE providers are allowed to facilitate learning sessions for the program to date. A designated MCLE Committee, which holds office in the IBP headquarters in Pasig City, monitors and oversees MCLE program administration by the accredited providers.

MCLE providers offer various courses to enable every learner to complete the required 36 units per compliance period (usually takes three years). All MCLE courses are designed to cover specified topics, including legal ethics, trial and pre-trial skills, alternative dispute resolution, updates of procedural law and jurisprudence, legal writing/ oral advocacy, international law, and other prescribed subjects, which could be about anything under the sun like technology and the law, taxation, cryptocurrency, and psychology and the law, among others.

Classroom setup

MCLE providers are basically required to conduct their classroom or physical learning sessions in suitable and comfortable venues. The site should be sufficient to hold the number of session attendees, should be accessible to public transportation, and should be conducive for learning.

Session schedules and duration should be strategically set. MCLE sessions are not allowed to coincide with observation of religious holidays. Schedule and venue, along with designated lecturers, topics, and related learning activities (even coffee and lunch breaks) must be strictly carried out as set or planned, otherwise, the MCLE Committee must be notified in advance of any change. Visual and other learning aids must be used to conduct the sessions more effectively.

Online MCLE

In 2020, ACCESS made history and through its efforts gave Philippine lawyers the option to take MCLE online. Incidentally, it coincided with the implementation of lockdowns due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which lasted for over two years.

ACCESS MCLE, one of the accredited MCLE providers in the country, has been leading its industry when it comes to innovations and best practices for facilitation of online MCLE. Still aligned with the requirements of the MCLE Committee and with the approval from the Supreme Court, ACCESS MCLE introduced synchronous (online classroom and ‘flexisynch’) and asynchronous (on-demand) modes of learning.

As an alternative, and obviously more popular mode of MCLE delivery, accredited providers must adhere to two more major requirements—assurance of authenticity of identity of the learners and relevance of course content. Moreover, the online program must also adhere with other related concerns like data privacy, internet connection reliability, and content production, among others.

Interestingly, lawyers now have more options when it comes to MCLE compliance. Online MCLE remains popular, though many also opt for the traditional or face-to-face learning setup in the post-pandemic times. Whichever option is chosen, Filipino lawyers can expect continuous upgrade of knowledge and skills in the profession.

Calls for an End to Self-Serving Leadership Concerns Under CHED Chairperson Agrupis Grow Amid Questions Over Wastage of Government Funds

0

When National Artist Kidlat Tahimik renounced the privileges attached to his National Artist recognition, his message went beyond one artist’s protest. It became a powerful reminder of the need to protect Filipino culture, history, ethics, and the humanities at a time when questions continue to emerge on the direction of higher education in the country.

The internationally acclaimed filmmaker, whose real name is Eric de Guia, raised concerns over what he sees as the diminishing importance given to history and the humanities in shaping future generations.

But his stand has also opened a wider discussion — one that now puts the spotlight on the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the leadership of Chairperson Shirley Agrupis.

Critics are questioning whether CHED Chairman Agrupis herself is practicing the same commitment to preserving history that it expects from the institutions under its supervision, following concerns that two major historical publications commissioned by the agency remain unreleased despite already being completed.

The books, authored by renowned historian Dr. Jaime Veneracion, were reportedly finished and ready for launch last year. However, instead of being distributed to schools, universities, libraries, researchers, and students, the publications have allegedly remained in storage.

The first book is considered the first and only written institutional history of CHED since its establishment in 1994 — documenting the agency’s milestones, reforms, challenges, and its role in shaping Philippine higher education.

The second book, titled “The Chairperson Speaks,” compiles the perspectives, experiences, achievements, and challenges faced by all CHED Chairpersons since 1994, serving as a historical record of the leadership that guided the agency throughout the years.

Critics, however, questioned why such important historical works have remained untouched under Agrupis’ leadership. Some have raised concerns that the delay may be because the publications do not focus on the current administration — including the absence of Agrupis’ image on the cover or highlights of her accomplishments — since the books were intended to document CHED’s larger institutional history.

The two CHED-commissioned publications have reportedly been left gathering dust in a CHED storage facility since 2025 — a situation critics describe as an unnecessary waste of government funds and a disservice to the Filipino academic community.

They stressed that these books were not created for any single administration, but for the benefit of schools, libraries, educators, policymakers, and students who deserve access to the history of Philippine higher education.

For stakeholders, the issue raises a bigger question: Should an institution responsible for guiding the future of education allow its own history to be forgotten?

The controversy comes as CHED Chairman Agrupis faces increasing calls for stronger leadership, accountability, and presence on issues affecting students and higher education institutions.

*The growing concerns surrounding CHED’s Chairman Agrupis  are expected to become among the pressing matters confronting the incoming leadership of the Senate Committee on Higher, Technical and Vocational Education, as the controversy raises broader questions on how CHED fulfills its mandate to uphold transparency, accountability, and responsible governance in an agency entrusted with shaping the future of millions of Filipino learners.*

Observers also pointed out that CHED Chairman Agrupis strictly requires universities to comply with numerous guidelines before students are allowed to participate in off-campus activities — from documentation and approvals to safety protocols. Yet stakeholders question whether the agency demonstrates the same level of urgency and action when issues involving student welfare and institutional responsibility arise.

“Maraming hinahanap na requirements ang CHED bago makalabas ang mga bata sa confines ng unibersidad. Dapat may masasabi rin ang CHED sa mga ganitong issue,” one stakeholder said.

Critics added that leadership in education should not be defined by visibility in ceremonies, titles, or recognition, but by decisions that protect public interest, preserve institutional memory, and strengthen the academic sector.

As discussions continue, Kidlat Tahimik’s symbolic stand to defend culture and history has grown beyond one artist’s protest — becoming a powerful call for accountability and raising deeper questions on leadership within CHED under Chairperson Shirley Agrupis. For critics, an institution entrusted with shaping the future of Philippine education must also recognize the importance of preserving its own past. True leadership is not defined by titles, personal recognition, or visibility, but by the responsibility to protect institutional legacy, uphold public trust, and ensure that the knowledge and history built through generations are not forgotten — but passed on to the Filipino learners it was meant to serve.

Tingog Party-list vows to help wounded students and affected families in Tacloban City school shooting

0

TINGOG Party-list on Monday vowed to help students wounded in the Tacloban City high school shooting incidents, their families and those of three students who lost their lives.

In a statement, the group said it is already coordinating with the relevant agencies to extend hospitalization and medical assistance and mental health support.

“At this difficult hour, our first responsibility is to care for the victims and their families. Tingog Party-list is already coordinating with the concerned hospitals, the Tacloban City Government, the Department of Education, and relevant national agencies to help ensure that the injured students receive the medical attention they need,” it said.

It said assistance would be extended for hospitalization, medicines, laboratory requirements, follow-up treatment, transportation, and other immediate medical expenses.

The group also promised to arrange for mental and psychosocial support for the affected families.

“Tingog Party-list also recognizes that the wounds from this tragedy go far beyond physical injuries. Psychosocial support must immediately reach the bereaved families, the injured students, their classmates, teachers, school personnel, and the wider San Jose community,” it said.

The group said it would work with the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Department of Education, health professionals, guidance counselors, faith communities, and local government partners “to provide grief counseling, trauma debriefing, crisis intervention, and continuing mental-health support.”

It joined Leyte 1st District Rep. Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez in calling for a swift and thorough investigation into the shooting incident.

“We call for a thorough, swift, and impartial investigation into how this tragedy happened, including how firearms entered the school environment and what measures must be strengthened to protect learners and educators. Accountability must be pursued fully, with due regard for the law and the special protections required where minors are involved,” it said.

It expressed grief over the incident and mourned with families that lost their loved ones.

“Our hearts are with the families now carrying an unimaginable loss, with the injured students and their loved ones, and with every teacher, classmate, and school personnel member shaken by this terrible violence,” it said.

“To the families who have lost their children, we mourn with you. To the injured and traumatized students, you are not alone. Tiingog Party-list stands with the San Jose National High School community, and the people of Tacloban City in prayer, solidarity, and concrete action, so that healing may begin and every learner may return to school with safety, dignity, and hope,” the group said.

The party-list organization called for measures for safe schools.

“A school must always be a place of learning, safety, friendship, and hope. The loss of young lives within a campus wounds the entire Tacloban community and calls all of us to respond with urgency, compassion, and resolve,” it said.

“Tingog Party-list supports stronger and sustained measures for safer schools: closer coordination among schools, parents, barangays, police, mental-health professionals, and local government units; accessible reporting channels for threats and warning signs; strengthened school security protocols; and programs that promote peace, responsible conflict resolution, and care for the well-being of every learner,” it added.

Reflecting this responsibility, PHILCONSTRUCT 2026 adopts the theme “Responsible Construction for a Resilient Philippines,” emphasizing the importance of integrity, sustainability, and disaster resilience in the planning, design, and delivery of our urban environment. The theme underscores the industry’s commitment to supporting long-term infrastructure development and creating lasting value for communities and future generations. A10 Networks Acquires TrojAI Inc., Expanding AI Roadmap

Accelerates A10’s AI strategy to Protect Models, Applications, and Agents Across all Deployment Models

A10 Networks (NYSE: ATEN) today announced that it has acquired TrojAI, an AI security company focused on helping organizations secure, test and govern AI applications and agentic workflows. The acquisition strengthens A10’s ability to deliver sovereign AI security, helping customers control how and where their AI models, data and agents are protected.

TrojAI delivers two layers of AI security: red teaming that probes models, agents, and applications for vulnerabilities at build time, and real-time threat protection that defends them at runtime. Together, they let organizations deploy generative and agentic AI quickly and with confidence.

“AI is changing both what enterprises build and the attack surface they have to defend, and traditional controls weren’t designed for non-deterministic models and autonomous agents,” said Dhrupad Trivedi, President and Chief Executive Officer of A10 Networks. “TrojAI is a natural fit for A10, strategically and operationally. Pairing our hardware-based AI firewall with TrojAI’s software-based red teaming and runtime protection helps customers adopt AI quickly and confidently, protecting their models, data, and agents without sacrificing the latency or availability they rely on us for, whether on-premises, in the cloud, or hybrid. For customers with strict data-sovereignty requirements, it means embracing AI while keeping their most sensitive assets in environments they control.”

Following the acquisition, A10 expects to integrate TrojAI’s capabilities into its evolving security portfolio, letting customers run secured AI wherever their data resides.

“Enterprises and public-sector organizations are adopting AI at an unprecedented pace, and they need to innovate securely while maintaining sovereignty over their AI security infrastructure,” said Lee Weiner, Chief Executive Officer of TrojAI. “Together with A10, we can secure and govern the models, agents, and applications becoming core to how organizations operate. I’m proud of what our team has built, and excited to bring these capabilities to A10’s customers and channels.”

A10 does not expect the acquisition to have a material impact on its financial results for fiscal year 2026. It is squarely positioned to help secure AI buildouts and application rollouts in the next 2-5 years.

Enroll Anytime, Learn Anytime: Online Education (OEd) Breaks the Boundaries of Traditional Education for the Next Generation of Filipino Learners

0

Education has always been one of the most powerful tools in shaping a brighter future. However, for many Filipinos, the traditional path toward earning a degree often comes with challenges—from fixed schedules and geographical limitations to work, family, and personal responsibilities that make classroom-based learning difficult.

As the world continues to embrace digital transformation, education is also evolving to become more flexible, accessible, and responsive to the needs of today’s learners. Leading this movement is Online Education (OEd), the first full online school in the Philippines, redefining how Filipinos pursue quality education by giving them the freedom to learn wherever they are and whenever they are ready.

With a flexible learning approach centered on “Enroll Anytime, Start Anytime, Study Anytime,” OEd empowers learners to take control of their academic journey—allowing them to begin, continue, and complete their education on a timeline that works for them.

Breaking the Boundaries of Traditional Education

For years, students have adjusted their goals around fixed enrollment periods and academic calendars. Missing an enrollment deadline often meant delaying dreams and waiting months before getting another opportunity to move forward.

OEd changes this by bringing education closer to the learner.

Through its open enrollment system and fully online learning platform, students no longer have to put their aspirations on hold. Whether they are incoming college students preparing for the future, working professionals seeking career advancement, entrepreneurs managing their businesses, athletes and artists pursuing their passions, or Filipinos overseas wanting to continue their studies, OEd provides a flexible pathway where education remains within reach.

By allowing students to access learning materials online and study at their own pace, OEd creates opportunities beyond the limitations of location, time, and traditional classroom settings.

Helping Filipino Youth Take Charge of Their Future

Today’s Filipino youth belong to a generation driven by innovation, independence, and possibility. They are digital natives who seek opportunities that allow them to pursue their ambitions while preparing for meaningful careers in a fast-changing world.

OEd recognizes that every learner has a unique story and a different path toward success.

Through flexible online education, OEd encourages students to take ownership of their goals while developing future-ready skills beyond academics—including self-discipline, adaptability, digital confidence, responsibility, and time management.

This approach prepares learners not only to earn their degrees but also to become more confident and capable individuals ready to navigate the demands of tomorrow’s industries.

Education Designed for Today and Tomorrow

More than an online learning platform, OEd represents a new era of education—one built around accessibility, flexibility, and the belief that every Filipino deserves the opportunity to learn without limitations.

As the first full online school in the Philippines, OEd continues to challenge the traditional boundaries of education by creating pathways for learners from different walks of life—proving that dreams should not be delayed by distance, schedules, or circumstances.

The path to success is different for every learner. Through flexible online education, OEd gives Filipinos the chance to take the next step toward their goals—removing the barriers of time and distance, and proving that it is never too early or too late to begin. Because success does not follow a single timeline—and education should not either.

With OEd, every learner has the power to start today.

Calls for Lack of CHED  Leadership under Chairman Agrupis Snowballs as Kidlat Tahimik Renounces His National Artist Privileges in Protest

0

The leadership of Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairperson Shirley Agrupis is facing growing questions as one of the country’s most respected cultural figures raises concerns over the future direction of Philippine education.

National Artist Kidlat Tahimik, known for his lifelong advocacy in preserving Filipino identity and culture, has taken a strong symbolic stand against CHED’s Reframed General Education Curriculum (RGEC)expressing his willingness to surrender his National Artist medallion and give up the privileges attached to the recognition in protest of what he believes could weaken the role of culture, history, and the humanities in higher education.

The move has placed renewed attention on CHED’s leadership under Agrupis, turning the curriculum debate into a broader discussion on education priorities, consultation, and the responsibility of policymakers in protecting Filipino identity.

At the center of the issue is CHED’s push toward competency-based learning, industry alignment, and workforce readiness. While these reforms aim to prepare graduates for evolving global demands, critics and cultural advocates have raised concerns that the shift may reduce emphasis on subjects that develop national consciousness, creativity, critical thinking, and appreciation of Filipino heritage.

The controversy follows discussions surrounding the RGEC, which seeks to restructure college general education requirements. The General Education (GE) curriculum — previously reduced from 72 units to 36 units under earlier reforms — is facing another major shift amid concerns over proposals that could further reduce GE subjects to 18 units.

For many educators and advocates, the issue has become a test of Agrupis’ leadership — whether CHED can pursue modernization without weakening the cultural and humanistic foundations of higher education.

Kidlat, born Eric de Guia and deeply connected to Baguio and the Cordillera region, has spent decades defending Filipino stories, indigenous wisdom, and local perspectives through his films and advocacy.

Known as the “Father of Philippine Independent Cinema,” Kidlat built a career challenging cultural dependence on foreign influences while promoting the importance of Filipino identity.

His opposition carries significant weight because it comes from an artist whose life’s work has centered on preserving the very values that critics fear may lose their place in Philippine classrooms.

In his position letter addressed to Agrupis, Kidlat warned that an education system focused heavily on technical competencies and workforce preparation risks overlooking the deeper purpose of learning — developing citizens with cultural awareness, compassion, creativity, critical thinking, and a strong sense of identity.

His willingness to give up his National Artist privileges has become a symbolic challenge to CHED’s direction: that education reform should not only prepare Filipinos for employment, but also preserve the values and history that define them as a people.

In 2018, Kidlat was conferred the Order of National Artists, the highest national recognition given to Filipinos who have made outstanding contributions to Philippine arts and culture. The recognition comes with a medallion, national honor, lifetime monthly stipend, medical and hospitalization benefits, and other privileges accorded to National Artists.

For someone recognized by the nation for safeguarding Filipino culture, the decision to walk away from these privileges sends a message that many believe CHED cannot ignore.

The growing discussion now places Agrupis’ leadership under closer examination — particularly on how CHED plans to balance global competitiveness with its responsibility to protect the cultural, historical, and intellectual foundations of higher education.

Supporters of modernization acknowledge the need for technology, innovation, and industry-ready skills. However, critics emphasize that higher education must not be reduced to workforce preparation alone, but should continue developing Filipinos who understand their history, communities, and role in nation-building.

As CHED under Agrupis moves forward with its reforms, the challenge before the commission is no longer limited to implementing a curriculum change. It is about defining the kind of graduates Philippine education hopes to produce.

For Agrupis, the growing criticism marks a defining test of leadership — whether CHED will listen and respond to the sectors calling for a more balanced approach, or move forward despite concerns over the possible long-term impact on Filipino identity and culture.

What began as a debate on curriculum reform has now become a broader conversation on accountability, consultation, and the responsibility of CHED leadership in shaping future generations.

As questions continue to grow, the challenge now rests on Agrupis and CHED — to prove that Philippine education can move forward and remain globally competitive without leaving behind the history, culture, and Filipino identity it is meant to protect.
