Literature, creativity take the spotlight at Book Nook SM Aura this July

In line with their advocacy of supporting literature in the country, instilling a love of reading, and promoting creativity among Filipinos, Book Nook recently held events this July to underscore the importance of literature in the brain development of a child, as well as help vloggers and content creators improve their art.

The events took place at the Book Nook branch in SM Aura in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City.

Book Nook celebrate National Children’s Book Day

Last July 16, Book Nook, in partnership with the International Board on Books for Young People – Philippines, Quezon City Public Library, hosted a fun activity for children consisting of several activities that revolved around reading and literature, in celebration of National Children’s Book Day.

A total of 40 children and parents from Brgy. East Rembo in Taguig City were treated to an afternoon of activities designed to pique their curiosity and imagination, including a puppet show, a storytelling session, and a read-aloud session. Through the activity, Book Nook aims to nurture children’s love for literature and promote the habit of reading among them.

Camerahaus holds “VlogCon” in partnership with Book Nook

Last July 20, Book Nook hosted a VlogCon led by Camerahaus, the biggest photography retailer in the Philippines. The event was aimed at teaching the basics of vlogging and content creation and providing tips and best practices to aspiring and seasoned vloggers and content creators alike

Over 600 participants joined the event, where a number of respected content creators educated the attendees on how they can enhance their vlogs and content creation process

During the event, the several speakers also talked about the importance of investing in the right equipment for the job, introducing them to the best vlogging equipment available today.

To make the event even more exciting for the attendees, Camerahaus hosted numerous fun games, raffles, and contests, where the attendees took home peripherals which they can use for the vlogging and content creation.

Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC Philippines), a project under the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the President of the United States’ Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and spearheaded by FHI360, proudly extended its support as a sponsor to this year’s Philippine LGBTQ ICON Awards.

The awards, organized by The Red Whistle, a non-government organization that advocates for HIV awareness and LGBTQ rights, together with O Bar Philippines, Pasig, was held at ARISE, the 13th Annual Philippine Pride Party, last June 29, 2024, Saturday.

“We are incredibly honored to be working with other organizations that are working towards a more accessible prevention, testing, and treatment action plan for PLHIV,” said Joven Roy Santiago, FHI360 Technical Advisor for Social and Behavior Change Communication. “Our hope is that, through our united efforts, we will be able to mitigate the spread of HIV and facilitate a society where those who have HIV can live full, healthy, and happy lives.”

EpiC Philippines’ campaign, “Free To Be U!”, promotes awareness and accessibility for HIV prevention, testing, and treatment, empowering everyone regardless of HIV status to be free to be themselves. Representatives for “Free To Be U!” were present at the ICON Awards, distributing both condoms and fliers on pre-exposure prophylaxis treatments (PrEP) for HIV prevention.

Now in its third year, the ICON Awards recognizes and honors pioneers, trailblazers, and allies of the LGBTQIA+ community, individuals who have shown dedication to representation, support for equality and change, and advocacy against discrimination.

This year saw Adrian Lindayag, multi-awarded movie, television and theater actor, recognized with the Young People’s Champion Award for his dedication to queer visibility in media. Veteran singer, songwriter, actor and director Ice Seguerra was graced with the Trans Trailblazer Award, for his efforts in paving the way for other trans artists in the entertainment industry.

Marina Summers, performer and drag queen best known for competing in Drag Race Philippines and RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK vs. the World, was awarded the Beacon of Representation Award, for bringing Pinoy Pride to the international stage and upholding LGBTQIA+ excellence.

Meanwhile, human rights advocate, lawyer, and Chairman of the Free Legal Assistance Group, Atty. Chel Diokno, was named for the Ally for Change Award for his unwavering support of the SOGIESC Anti-Discrimination Bill.

Finally, former Vice President of the Philippines and Chairperson of the Angat Buhay Foundation Atty. Leni Robredo, was honored as this year’s Icon of the Year, for her personal advocacy for equality, outspokenness against discrimination, and the impactful programs and initiatives of Angat Buhay that support the Filipino LGBTQIA+ community.

“All over the world, we see members of the LGBTQIAP+ community breaking barriers, defying expectations and making groundbreaking contributions in various fields. We must continue to open more spaces in our society where each one can embrace their truth and reach their full potential,” said Robredo in a video message.

The night was capped off by extravagant and exciting performances by Marina Summers and fellow Drag Race royalty Precious Paula Nicole, as well as many other talented drag queens from all over the Philippines. Pop culture icon, singer and actress Maris Racal also made her O Bar performance debut that evening.

Founded in 2011, The Red Whistle grew from a cause started by a group of friends pushing for HIV awareness and equality, to an organization that focuses on the broader spectrum of issues that People Living with HIV (PLHIV) face, such as testing and treatment accessibility, mental health services, and recognition of diversity in sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics.

Online rice cake vendor gets boost from PLDT Global and DMW

For 37-year-old Caviteña Annalyn Fernan, selling suman (rice cake) and other native delicacies online is her lifeline and way forward. The beneficiary of an overseas Filipino worker in Saudi Arabia who passed away last year, Fernan now has the sole responsibility of earning to support the needs of her family.

During the pandemic, Fernan’s senior mother thought of starting their suman business, which continues to do well even today. To boost their sales, Fernan uses her phone and the internet to market their products on social media and receive more orders online.

“We get orders from our community, and we even receive orders from other OFWs overseas who see my posts online,” she shared. “That’s why having a reliable internet connection is important to me.”

A mother of two, Fernan also devotes her time to growing her loading and bills payment business, which was part of the OFW Family Livelihood Program jointly awarded by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and PLDT Global Corporation (PLDT Global) earlier this year. The livelihood program also awarded Fernan a Smart Ka-Partner retailer package, including a smartphone and marketing materials and signages to help her increase her sales.

“The money I earn from the business helps us in our daily needs, that’s why I’m grateful,” she said. “To PLDT Global, I am thankful that they are partners with the DMW and they are able to help make our lives easier.

Unveiling of The San Juan EcoBridge Plastic Recycling Project: A Groundbreaking Collaboration Between MMDA, Media Puzzle Holdings Corp, and Kamaymanos Art and Design

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), in partnership with Media Puzzle Holdings Corp and in collaboration with Kamaymanos Art & Design, has launched the San Juan EcoBridge Retrofit Project. This initiative is groundbreaking as it marks the first footbridge in Metro Manila to be beautified using sustainable recycled materials, setting a new standard for urban beautification and environmental sustainability.

The San Juan EcoBridge, located along Ortigas Avenue Extension corner Club Filipino Avenue in San Juan City, has been transformed using recycled plastic waste, primarily sachet plastics. This project not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the footbridge but also addresses pressing environmental concerns by repurposing materials that are typically seen as non-recyclable.

The unveiling event was graced in the presence of Atty. Romando Artes – MMDA Acting Chairman, and San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora. Both dignitaries expressed their support for the project, highlighting its potential to set a precedent for future urban beautification and sustainability efforts.

Gio Orbos, co-founder of Kamaymanos Art & Design, emphasized the project’s innovative focus on upcycling sachet plastics. These plastics, often regarded as disposable and non-recyclable, have been given new life through this initiative. Orbos elaborated on the environmental impact of plastic production and disposal, aiming to demonstrate that such materials can possess both longevity and visual appeal when creatively repurposed.

Orbos also highlighted the Philippines’ substantial impact on ocean plastic waste, citing Metro Manila’s heavily polluted rivers. Through the San Juan EcoBridge Retrofit Project, he aims to catalyze a global movement towards environmental sustainability and proudly demonstrate that Filipinos are not just part of the problem, but also the solution.

Ms. Cherry Carrera, president of Media Puzzle Holdings Corp, expressed her gratitude to the MMDA for their collaboration and support in using the footbridge for this groundbreaking project. She highlighted that this initiative aligns perfectly with MMDA’s advocacies and represents a pioneering effort within Media Puzzle Holdings Corp.’s   ongoing footbridge beautification program. Carrera also mentioned that this project is just the beginning, and hopefully with this initial effort, the future will look bright for the environment.

Carrera also extended her gratitude to San Juan City LGU specially to Mayor Francis Zamora for their unwavering support in this project. She emphasized that their commitment to enhancing the city’s infrastructure and environment has been instrumental in ensuring the project’s success.

This critical issue was the focus of the Viettel Cyber Security (VCS) launching event held on July 18, 2024, at the Palawan Ballroom of Edsa Shangri-la Hotel.

The event, titled “Philippines Cyberthreat Landscape: How Secure Are You? Discover Viettel’s Advanced Cyber Security Solutions,” was organized by Banbros Commercial Inc. (BCI) in collaboration with VCS. Attended by a diverse group of partners, primarily system integrators, the event aimed to discuss the current cyber threat landscape in the country and showcase VCS’s comprehensive cybersecurity solutions.

One of the keynote speakers, Mr. Nam Nguyen, Director of Global Business & Partnership at Viettel Cyber Security, provided a detailed overview of the Philippine Threat Landscape for the first half of 2024. He highlighted prevalent issues such as malware and data breaches, emphasizing the growing importance of cybersecurity. Mr. Nguyen illustrated how to address these challenges.
