Sun Life Foundation to illuminate Last Mile Schools for Sun Life Philippines’ 130th year

The future is looking brighter for off-grid schools as Sun Life FinancialPhilippines Foundation, Inc. (Sun Life Foundation) teams up with Solar Village Foundation to bring solar power to Last Mile Schools in celebration of Sun Life Philippines’ 130th anniversary.

Last Mile Schools are small schools located in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas. They often face resource challenges, from lack of access to electricity and the internet to inadequate learning materials and limited teaching staff. Many of these schools serve indigenous people (IP) learners in multigrade classrooms.

Dubbed “Project 130 Brighter Schools,” the program’s goal is to reach up to 130 schools by 2030. It aims to improve these learning environments by installing 2KWH solar energy systems that can power lights, laptops, printers, and basic electronics. This will extend learning hours, improve safety, comfort, and efficiency, and enhance teaching resources.

The first phase of the project will cover 20 schools in Sarangani, South Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat, directly benefiting around 180 teachers and 2,600 students.

“We are grateful to mark our 130th year in the Philippines, and this milestone inspires us to reach more

Filipinos,” said Sun Life Philippines CEO and Country Head and Sun Life Foundation Chairman Benedict Sison. “With this project, we hope to not only brighten schools in the far reaches of our country but also transform lives and empower communities.”

Sun Life Financial-Philippines Foundation, Inc. (Sun Life Foundation) was recently recognized for its social development programs, winning two awards at the 2025 CSR Guild Awards held in Makati City.

Presented by the League of Corporate Foundations, the CSR Guild Awards honors organizations for exemplary corporate citizenship initiatives.

Sun Life Foundation received the Outstanding CSR Project in Financial Inclusion award for its “Building

Household Resilience Among Near-Shore Fishers” initiative. A partnership with international nonprofit group Rare, the program promoted financial literacy and resilience among fisherfolk in six communities in Negros Oriental and the Camotes Islands in Cebu.

The team also won the Outstanding CSR Project in Health award for the “Sun Life Barangay Health Stations” program, a partnership with Health Futures Foundation, Inc. that builds fully equipped health stations in remote rural areas. With 13 health stations completed as of 2025, and three more underway for a total of 16 stations, the program has to date brought basic health care closer to over 40,000 residents.

“At Sun Life Foundation, our goal is to deliver sustainable support to communities, benefiting both current and future generations. These awards from LCF affirm our vision and motivate us to continue doing our share to uplift lives,” said Executive Director Kristine Millete. “We share this recognition with our partners, volunteers, and everyone involved in our programs’ success.”

‘Building Resilient Communities: LGUs Leverage PLDT-Smart Ligtas Kit

In a disaster-prone nation like the Philippines, local government units (LGUs) are stepping up their emergency response capabilities through innovative communication tools. At the heart of this shift is the PLDT-Smart Ligtas Kit, a compact yet powerful solution helping LGUs bridge critical communication gaps in disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM).

Reliable communication where it matters most

For remote and high-risk areas, maintaining reliable communication during emergencies remains a persistent challenge. In Kapangan, Benguet, officials once had to physically reach isolated barangays to deliver updates, delaying critical advisories like class suspensions.

​Fortunately, the municipality has reported no disaster-related deaths over the years—a feat attributed to improved communication and stronger community compliance.

Erick Abangley, Municipal DRRM Officer of Kapangan, noted that, since receiving the PLDT-Smart Ligtas Kit, the ability to send information more easily to barangays has led to real improvement.

In Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte, the Municipal DRRM Office (MDRRMO) used the PLDT-Smart Ligtas Kit to issue timely and critical updates during a sudden nighttime flood, contributing to zero casualties and faster rescue coordination, even when entire barangays were cut off. “The Ligtas Kit helped us communicate real-time updates and manage rescue efforts more efficiently,” said Monesa D. Ayao-Sale, MDRRMO. “Everyone was informed and ready.”

A versatile lifeline for emergency response

More than just a communication bundle, the PLDT-Smart Ligtas Kit is a multi-functional resource designed for local needs. In Kapangan, its bundled mobile phone now serves as the main 24/7 hotline of the municipality’s Emergency Operations Center.

In the municipality of Catarman in Northern Samar,  the PLDT-Smart Ligtas Kit’s solar power bank ensures that responders and even residents are able to keep their devices charged during power outages. It complements existing tools such as mobile phones, radio, internet, social media, and traditional “bandilyo” announcements.

In Datu Odin Sinsuat, the kit is also used for pre-disaster risk assessments and barangay-level training, while Kapangan LGU utilizes it for monitoring during holidays and local events — further embedding the technology into everyday preparedness.

Strengthening communities and supporting responders

The Ligtas Kit has also fostered greater community involvement. In Catarman, Northern Samar, residents in remote barangays now actively assist in hazard monitoring by sending photos and updates, particularly during floods. Following a major flooding event in 2023, early evacuation behavior has notably improved.

An unexpected yet meaningful benefit has also emerged: the kit has become a vital tool for responders to stay in touch with their families during operations—boosting morale and reinforcing the human side of disaster response. Emerald Guevara, Catarman MDRRMO, emphasized that the ability for responders to communicate with their families has been very important and has significantly boosted their morale.

Training makes the difference

Each Ligtas Kit deployment includes Emergency Communications Training (ECT), equipping responders to maximize the kit’s potential.

In Datu Odin Sinsuat, this training enabled more targeted awareness campaigns and better use of the kit in barangay-level DRR activities—especially in remote areas.  MDRRMO head Ayao-Sale noted that while consistent IEC efforts had been in place, the training allowed the MDRRMO to better connect with the community and enhance responsiveness during crises.

In Kapangan, combining technology with capacity building training proved essential. According to MDRRMO Abangley, “Knowing how and when to use the Ligtas Kit allows us to get the most from it. It’s not just about the tool—it’s about capacity.”

Resilience through innovation and collaboration

To date, PLDT and Smart have deployed 56 Ligtas Kits across the country, enhancing local governments’ ability to respond swiftly, coordinate effectively, and keep communities safe—before, during, and after disasters.

This initiative supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 13: Climate Action. Through innovation, training, and partnership, PLDT and Smart are helping build disaster-resilient communities across the Philippines, ensuring no one is left behind in times of crisis.

Held at the Blue Leaf Cosmopolitan in Bridgetowne, Quezon City last July 30, 2025, the event, aptly named “Making Friztory,” was a crazy good fusion of pop, fizz, and fun. The crowd raised their cans of Goodday Friz in a massive, synchronized toast, officially earning the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ for the Largest Carbonated Beverage Party. The once-in-a-lifetime celebration was an epic moment in beverage history.

Also present at the Goodday Friz launch were industry leaders Lance Gokongwei, President and CEO of JG Summit Holdings, Inc, and Asahi South, Central and Southeast Asia Group CEO Erwin Selvarajah, marking the beginning of an exciting collaboration that redefines the beverage landscape in the Philippines.
