How local chocolate producer Kakaw Galleon made business sweeter with PLDT and Smart

0

The famous line from the 1994 hit movie Forrest Gump, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get” has been true so far for Isagani de Ocampo, owner and chocolatier of Kakaw Galleon.

De Ocampo began his career as a seafarer in 2009 and was trained as a Pastry Chef aboard cruise ships. This was followed by a chance to train under the esteemed Jean-Philippe Maury’s chocolate shop, honing Isagani’s skills under the guidance of masters.

But fate had different plans for the chocolatier. When the pandemic hit in 2020, Isagani belonged to the first batch of repatriated overseas Filipino workers. It was also this time when he started creating his own chocolate formula, dreaming of launching his own chocolate line in the Philippines.

“It was hard at first because our taste for chocolate is quite different. Filipinos prefer the “stateside” chocolate. So, I thought of making a local version of chocolate that tastes like it’s imported,” he shared. “I wanted to bring the technology and the taste that I learned from abroad closer to chocolate lovers here,” he added.

But starting the business in a pandemic was not easy. For one, he had to rent a separate place for his chocolate factory – which was not possible during the lockdown. De Ocampo had to put his business on hold for a year before he was able to launch his first product in November of 2021.

“It became a hit, and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) heard about it. They approached me and offered me help. I held my first bazaar with them in January of the next year and I introduced my product as a local ‘imported’ chocolate. And the rest is history,” he recalled.

To scale his business even further, Isagani saw the value of upskilling and learning how to employ digital tools to boost micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) like Kakaw Galleon. When the invitation to attend the eBizNovation program under the livelihood advocacy of PLDT and Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) came, he did not hesitate to join.

“I’m a non-tech savvy person. Technology and I don’t get along. But I saw the invite to the eBizNovation workshop of DTI and PLDT and Smart, so I attended the event. Then, when I returned home, I told my wife about it, and she volunteered to implement it,” de Ocampo said.

The eBizNovation program is a digital upskilling-to-ecommerce program that aims to provide local entrepreneurs, cooperatives, and MSMEs like Kakaw Galleon the right digital tools to help them grow their businesses online.

Together with government partners such as the DTI, LGUs, local chambers of commerce, and ecommerce platforms like TikTok Shop, eBizNovation trains local business owners like Isagani how to maximize digital commerce to boost their livelihood.

“The skills and knowledge we gained from PLDT and Smart’s eBizNovation training have helped us build our digital platforms and online payment system, and ultimately helped boost our online presence and sales. We are thankful for this opportunity,” the chocolatier shared.

PLDT and Smart are committed to uplifting the lives of Filipinos through livelihood and entrepreneurship opportunities made possible by technology. These initiatives also support the UN SDGs #1 No Poverty and #8 Decent Work and Economic Growth.

Empowering women at Asticom: Nurturing success in life and work

0

Asticom Technology Inc., the country’s premier shared services company, proudly honors the remarkable women who drive its success. From mothers balancing work and family to senior leaders forging new paths, Asticom recognizes the invaluable contributions of women and is committed to fostering an environment where they can thrive in all aspects of their lives.

Crafting a life with care

Melaine Aure, a Project Manager and Production Support Lead, exemplifies how Asticom supports women in harmonizing their professional and personal lives. She meticulously plans her weeks, cherishing quality moments with her children while unwinding with her husband at night to find balance.

Melaine candidly shares the challenges of being a working mom, advocating for embracing imperfections and taking life one step at a time, saying, “Asticom allows me to manage the many different hats that I’m wearing and find my stride that is suited to my goals and personal needs.”

Overcoming adversity

At Asticom, women like Melba Manalo, an Operations Supervisor and single mother of three, inspire others with their resilience. Despite facing financial obstacles, Melba persevered, building a rewarding career while expertly managing her responsibilities at home.

”Between balancing my career and personal responsibilities, Asticom taught me a vital lesson – the importance of prioritizing my mental well-being,” Melba shared. Her journey showcases her commitment to lifelong learning, kindness, and steadfast resolve. Her hard-won wisdom echoes powerfully in the advice she offers her younger self: to pursue education relentlessly and to embrace positive traits like respect, patience, empathy, and a willingness to assist others without expecting anything in return.

Leadership Lessons

Just as Melba and Melaine exemplify the dedication and persistence of Asticom’s exceptional female employees, its President and CEO Mharicar “Cai” Castillo-Reyes personifies the ability to overcome obstacles and achieve harmonious work-life integration. Cai deftly navigated the dual responsibilities of raising a young family and steering Asticom’s growth, made possible by the steadfast support of her husband.

Cai, a mother of one girl, shared how her early experiences shaped her approach to leadership, which revolves around guiding, empowering, and inspiring individuals, both within and outside the company. “I see leadership as a constant opportunity to learn, not just from my mentors but also from the people I encounter every day, whether within our company or beyond,” she shared, emphasizing the need for constant learning and the importance of understanding the unique challenges of integrating work and life.

She offered women leaders this advice: “Leadership is about inspiring others to live their purpose, breaking down barriers to achieve goals. As women leaders, you should embrace your natural style; it brings out the best in you and those you serve.”

Championing Diversity and Inclusion

Asticom strives to achieve a balanced workforce with a remarkable 55/45 gender representation, including a significant number of women in management roles. This creates a supportive environment that accommodates the varied needs and responsibilities of its female employees.

It celebrates the diverse talents and perspectives women bring to the team through initiatives like career development programs, mentoring opportunities, and a hybrid work setup.

With women at the forefront of its business, Asticom actively shapes a future where women can realize their aspirations and make invaluable contributions. By championing gender equality, the company is paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable workforce.

Women’s Month begins at SM Supermalls

0

In line with its commitment to women’s empowerment and gender equality, SM Supermalls, through its corporate social responsibility arm, SM Cares, launched this year’s Women’s Month celebration with a series of events championing a safe, inclusive, and enabling environment for women.

Promoting safe spaces for women at SM

Nearly 17,000 SM Supermalls front liners, employees, and partners gathered at the SM North Edsa Sky Dome and online on March 1 for a nationwide orientation on the Safe Spaces Act (Bawal Bastos Law) or Republic Act No. 11313. The Act penalizes gender-based sexual harassment committed in public spaces, educational or training institutions, workplaces, and online.  Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Undersecretary Atty. Benjo Santos M. Benavidez served as the forum’s keynote speaker and expounded on gender-based sexual harassment and the Safe Spaces Act.

Organized by SM Cares, in partnership with the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) and the DOLE, the forum is part of SM’s ongoing nationwide campaign to promote a safe, inclusive and empowering environment for women, and builds on the success of the first Safe Spaces Act orientation in October 2023, which saw the participation of 7,614 attendees from SM malls across the country.

SM Assistant Vice President and Program Director Jessica Sy reaffirmed SM’s commitment to preventing harassment and gender bias against women, especially within its premises, “We recognize that there are ongoing, systemic challenges that Filipinas continue to face today, both in the workplace and in society. By actively engaging with the public sector to educate our own people on the Safe Spaces Act, we remain committed to uphold the rights and dignity of women”.  Sy also reflected on the legacy of her grandfather, Mr. Henry Sy, Sr., which underscores the importance of inclusivity and respect in everything SM does, and added, “Remembering this provides a richer context when we say, Bawal bastos sa SM”.

‘Walk in Her Shoes’ exhibit

The compelling interactive exhibit, ‘Walk in Her Shoes’, by the United Nations Philippines was also launched on the same day and is ongoing until March 10 at the SM North Edsa, Level 3, Main Mall. The exhibit features real stories from women and girls, shedding light on different forms of gender-based violence they experience. The exhibit strives to raise awareness about the widespread nature of violence against women (VAW), encourage reflection on harmful social norms, and inspire collective action to end VAW.

During the launch, UN Philippines Resident Coordinator Gustavo Gonzalez thanked the PCW for leading efforts to empower women, and SM Cares and SM Supermalls for providing the space and platform to raise awareness about gender inequality and gender-based violence. “Gender equality demands a whole-of-government, whole-of-society approach. Only through collaboration across sectors can we dismantle harmful norms and build a world where women and girls enjoy the same rights and opportunities as men,” he said, adding that gender equality has economic impacts as it results in sustainable development.

SM lights up in purple to welcome Women’s Month

In solidarity with the ‘Purple Your Icon’ advocacy initiated by the PCW, several iconic SM landmarks and malls across the country lit up in purple to support the advancement of gender equality and women’s empowerment for a brighter future.

“Adorning our surroundings this month with purple serves not only as a beautiful tribute, but also as a powerful symbol. Purple signifies the spirit of women’s rights, highlighting the fight for equality and empowerment. It represents a future where limitations and stereotypes are transcended,” said PCW Officer-in-Charge Atty. Khay Ann Magundayao-Borlado.

SM Supermalls, through its social responsibility arm, SM Cares, champions women’s equality, empowerment, health, and welfare through its ongoing programs aimed at building a future where every woman feels safe, valued, respected, and enabled to reach her full potential.
