Jollibee Group Foundation, DepEd to Expand Central Kitchen Model for School-based Feeding Program

Jollibee Group Foundation (JGF), the social development arm of Jollibee Group, recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Department of Education (DepEd) for the adoption of the central kitchen model for School-based Feeding Program (SBFP), which aims to alleviate hunger among school-aged children. DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara led the signing ceremonies with JGF President Gisela Tiongson at the DepEd office last December 11, 2024.

Under the said partnership, JGF will provide capacity building support to share its expertise on implementing the central kitchen model with partner public schools, local government units, and local partners under the JGF Busog, Lusog, Talino (BLT) Program. This partnership is expected to benefit thousands of students from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao in the next one and a half years.

The Foundation first launched the BLT Program in 2007, recognizing the need to address hunger, a key factor contributing to low school attendance and high drop-out rates among public elementary students. In 2016, with DepEd implementing the School-based Feeding Program (SBFP) nationwide, JGF transitioned its approach by focusing on the establishment of central kitchens, reinforcing its commitment to promoting better access to food. To date it has spearheaded the creation of 41 central kitchens nationwide, providing continuous support to DepEd’s SBFP . Since its inception, the program has served meals to over 270,000 students from the direct feeding approach and the shift to establishing central kitchens.

“The BLT Kitchens centralize the preparation and distribution of meals, feeding thousands of students with less time and effort,” said JGF President Gisela Tiongson. “By working with DepEd and the support of the local government units, private institutions and parent volunteers in utilizing the central kitchen model, we can help mitigate hunger and give students better chances of continuing their education.”

Empowering facilitators

The Jollibee Group Foundation (JGF) will also support the development of training centers for central kitchen management. Under the partnership, 15 of JGF’s existing BLT partner schools will serve as learning hubs for organizations aiming to establish their own central kitchens.

To ensure consistent and sustainable implementation, JGF will create guidebooks and learning video materials for DepEd personnel and BLT partners. These resources will help standardize processes and support the long-term success of the initiative.

So far, twenty-nine DepEd Central and Regional personnel have participated in a four-day training led by JGF. These trained personnel will serve as coaches who will coordinate with local government units in setting up central kitchens for school and community feeding. They will also provide technical guidance on setting up and operating these central kitchens to ensure their sustainability and impact.

Max Business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs were in for a treat as renowned restaurateur and content creator Chef Tatung Sarthou graced Sun Life’s Coffee and Play event held at The Kitchen by Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in BGC last November 29, 2024.

While having a cooking demo, Chef Tatung shared his experiences and discussed the key ingredients of a successful food and restaurant business. Here are some of the key takeaways from his talk.

1. Define your success and create a plan to achieve it. “Success will happen by design, not by chance,” Chef Tatung imparted to the audience, adding that it starts with a vision and a plan. He emphasized the importance of being intenonal with developing an organizaon that comprises leaders and hard workers who share your vision and can help expand your business in the future.

2. Be a problem-solver. Acknowledging that one can be met with challenges every day, especially in business, Chef Tatung advises that having a problem-solving atude should be a ‘part of one’s DNA.’ “Successful businesses are there because they are able to solve other people’s problems,” he said.

3. Get professional help if you want to grow your business. “As you grow your business, it’s very important that you have sound advice from people who know finance,” said Chef Tatung. He added that budding entrepreneurs should seek the right legal and financial advice when seng up their business. During the event, the audience got a chance to taste the dishes that were part of his cooking demo – his special peri-peri chicken and chicken macaroni.

Chef Tatung’s cooking demo and talk were then followed by a game session, where participants got to try Sun Life’s original board game, Play for Life: A Game of Choices. They played the version specifically designed for business owners, and each table’s winner got special prizes from Sun Life and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.

SLEEP BASIC BED LINENS

“We have a polyester, which is a material that is durable. It’s wrinkle resistant. So, no matter how much you scratch it, you won’t see any crease marks. And it doesn’t shrink. The shrinkage is only 0.26% after the first wash. But it’s affordable because it’s man-made. And it was really intended to be affordable,” Cheng explained.

PRIME COMFORT BED LINENS

“We have the polyester cotton blend—50% polyester, 50% cotton. It’s called Prime Comfort. That’s the 180 Thread Count. The difference with polyester is that it’s soft, shrink-resistant, and wrinkle-resistant. But it has a breathable feature because we know that when we use cotton, it’s cool aNd comfortable,” Cheng continued.

PREMIUM TOUCH BED LINENS

“Cotton is made naturally, so it’s really more expensive because you’re going to source it from the cotton itself. Cotton has three types of thread count that Uratex sells. There’s 200TC or 200 thread count, which is Uratex Bed Linen. There’s also 300 thread count, which is Wing Bed Linen. There’s also Premium Touch Bed Linen at 500 thread count. When the thread count is higher, since more yarns are used, the surface is softer. So, it feels more luxurious when you touch it,” Cheng explained.

ECO DELUXE BED LINENS

“Then we also have 300 thread count bamboo. That’s the Eco Deluxe Bed Linen. The difference between bamboo and cotton is that bamboo is thinner. Bamboo is softer. Bamboo is very soft and cold. And it’s very comfortable to use. The difference with cotton is that the fabric is thinner and the bamboo is silky,” said Cheng.

Ambassadors of Good Quality

Bigboy said, “56 years na ang Uratex. Sikat tayo sa mga kutson, and never in my life nagkaroon ng bed linens. So, history ito para sa atin and gusto ko maging part nito.”

He added, “Grabe, ang sarap ng feel tapos yung mga designs, ang ganda rin tingnan as in. Na-try ko yung cotton and yung bamboo sa shoot namin, ang lambot sobra.”

As for Pauleen Luna-Sotto, Christian Cheng said of his choice as endorser: “She’s a great mom. On social media, we saw the sentiments about her are very positive. She’s a very hands-on mom. And, of course, because she’s the one who buys for the household, we target the Linen Purchasers. And those are the moms.”

Christian Cheng further added: “So, we needed to get a mom who does that. And Pauleen is the perfect example for that. And she also uses Uratex. So, what’s very common between Bigboy Cheng and Pauleen is that they’re very relevant to people.”

Pauleen, for her part, enthused: “My family loves buying and experiencing new bed sheets. That’s why I’m so glad that as a Uratex user, they finally have a bed linen line to complete their collection. I really got excited as a bed linen buyer and user.

“Actually, during the shoot, inantok ako when I tried them, specifically the cotton and the bamboo bed linens. It was so smooth and cool that I was about to sleep during the shoot.
