Acer named one of the World’s Top Companies for Women

0

Acer has been named one of the World’s Top Companies for Women in 2023, marking the second consecutive year of being recognized on the Forbes list. With this, Acer climbed from 291 to 259 and ranked 12th in the Semiconductors, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Technology Hardware & Equipment category.

Forbes surveyed 70,000 women across 37 territories in partnership with Statista, and the evaluation criteria included workplace practices, gender pay equity, handling of discrimination, and equal opportunities.

The recognition reflects Acer’s ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive work environment.

In the Philippines, Sue Ong-Lim is the managing director of Acer, leading a workforce of 139 employees.

She started in the company as a Senior Sales Executive in 2009 until she was named Managing Director this year.

As a leader, Ong-Lim describes herself as business-driven, but she said she relates personally to Acer’s employers, partners, and customers.

“Acer has 34.7% and 39% market share of consumer and gaming notebooks in the Philippines, respectively. This means that nearly a third of Filipinos who have a laptop own an Acer. The company has decades of building and strengthening brand equity through consistent sales, marketing, and customer service efforts. I see that as our edge over our competitors,” said Ong-Lim.

She attributes her success as a leader to her vision and thirst for learning. She has realized that even those at the top of their game should always continue having a learner’s mindset.

Ong-Lim said her gender doesn’t hinder her being a leader in a male-dominated industry.

“I believe in equality and inclusivity and that people, regardless of gender, are what make an organization special and successful,” she said.

What Lawyers can Expect from Accredited MCLE Providers in PH

0

Filipino law practitioners, just like their counterparts in many countries across the globe, are required by no less than the Supreme Court to undergo continuing legal education.

Now on its eighth compliance period, the mandatory continuing legal education (MCLE) program keeps every lawyer abreast of legal developments. It also elevates the national standards of the profession, helps improve justice administration, and enables the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) to “discharge its public responsibility more effectively.”

Bar Matter No. 850 identifies the purpose of MCLE—to ensure that throughout their career, IBP members will remain updated about law and jurisprudence, will keep the ethics of their profession, and will help enhance the standards of the practice.

Only 25 accredited MCLE providers are allowed to facilitate learning sessions for the program to date. A designated MCLE Committee, which holds office in the IBP headquarters in Pasig City, monitors and oversees MCLE program administration by the accredited providers.

MCLE providers offer various courses to enable every learner to complete the required 36 units per compliance period (usually takes three years). All MCLE courses are designed to cover specified topics, including legal ethics, trial and pre-trial skills, alternative dispute resolution, updates of procedural law and jurisprudence, legal writing/ oral advocacy, international law, and other prescribed subjects, which could be about anything under the sun like technology and the law, taxation, cryptocurrency, and psychology and the law, among others.

Classroom setup

MCLE providers are basically required to conduct their classroom or physical learning sessions in suitable and comfortable venues. The site should be sufficient to hold the number of session attendees, should be accessible to public transportation, and should be conducive for learning.

Session schedules and duration should be strategically set. MCLE sessions are not allowed to coincide with observation of religious holidays. Schedule and venue, along with designated lecturers, topics, and related learning activities (even coffee and lunch breaks) must be strictly carried out as set or planned, otherwise, the MCLE Committee must be notified in advance of any change. Visual and other learning aids must be used to conduct the sessions more effectively.

Online MCLE

In 2020, ACCESS made history and through its efforts gave Philippine lawyers the option to take MCLE online. Incidentally, it coincided with the implementation of lockdowns due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which lasted for over two years.

ACCESS MCLE, one of the accredited MCLE providers in the country, has been leading its industry when it comes to innovations and best practices for facilitation of online MCLE. Still aligned with the requirements of the MCLE Committee and with the approval from the Supreme Court, ACCESS MCLE introduced synchronous (online classroom and ‘flexisynch’) and asynchronous (on-demand) modes of learning.

As an alternative, and obviously more popular mode of MCLE delivery, accredited providers must adhere to two more major requirements—assurance of authenticity of identity of the learners and relevance of course content. Moreover, the online program must also adhere with other related concerns like data privacy, internet connection reliability, and content production, among others.

Interestingly, lawyers now have more options when it comes to MCLE compliance. Online MCLE remains popular, though many also opt for the traditional or face-to-face learning setup in the post-pandemic times. Whichever option is chosen, Filipino lawyers can expect continuous upgrade of knowledge and skills in the profession.

Quezon City LGBTQIA+ couples now “preposing” to each other with Right to Care Cards and we’re living for it

0

While any couple can declare their commitment for each other with traditional rings, this doesn’t have any bearing for members of the LGBTQIA+ community since marriage equality in the Philippines has yet to be legalized.

However, a handful of same-sex couples residing in Quezon City are turning the tide and are actually doing the next best thing—”preposing” to their partners with a Right to Care Card!

Mirroring usual prenup videos, each couple has published videos on their social media showing how they preposed to their partners with a Right to Care Card, which legally allows LGBTQIA+ partners to make decisions on behalf of their partners should they be hospitalized or be in need of medical treatments, a right that is only previously reserved for heterosexual married couples, if not next of kin.

Rea Leen shared the preposal video of her long-term partner via Facebook post, thanking Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte for giving them an opportunity like this. “For [those] outside Quezon City, I hope your city will have this too soon, and maybe in entire Philippines. Let’s spread love and enjoy!”, she shares.

Winch, who also shared their preposal to their partner, Anne, also expressed similar sentiments while thanking the Quezon City government for this initiative. “Isa itong malaking step para sa lahat ng LGBT couples na magkaroon ng karapatang legal na maalagaan ang aming mga partners,” they said through the caption posted.

Both couples also attended the fourth iteration of Quezon City’s commitment ceremony, with over 200 LGBTQIA+ couples participating. Mayor Joy Belmonte reiterated during the ceremony that this is a way to fulfill the city’s promises since it passed the Gender-Fair Ordinance a decade ago.

During the ceremony, 15 couples were the first ones to officially receive their Right to Care Cards since registering last year. Quezon City’s Gender and Development Office shares more will be distributed soon, but those who have not yet received their card may show their copy of the Special Power of Attorney contracts at hospitals.

Since its launch during Pride month in 2023, Quezon City made waves as the first city in Asia to launch such an initiative. As of February 2024, over 700 LGBTQIA+ couples have signed up for the Right to Care Card, which can be registered via the  Quezon City Gender and Development Council office or through bit.ly/RightToCareReg.

A Climate Change Takes Center Stage in Southeast Asia’s Music Scene

0

Through the years, the diverse musical traditions of Southeast Asia have served as a universal
language, fostering cultural exchange and knowledge. Today, this musical legacy is taking on a
new purpose: musicians around the world and from the region are lending their voices to move
people to action around the climate crisis.
One initiative is the Music Declares Emergency (MDE), a movement urging the music industry
to take action on climate change. Supported by artists such as Grammy-award winning singer
Billie Eilish who highlighted her environmental advocacy during one of her Happier Than Ever,
The World Tour concert legs in the Philippines in 2022 by strategically minimizing the
environmental impact of her tour. Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres World Tour, powered by
renewable energy and initiatives to reduce carbon footprint, is also expected to go live in the
Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand this 2024.
This goes beyond musical acts. From Thailand’s pioneering Wonderfruit Festival, with its waste
reduction and renewable energy, to Malaysia’s Rainforest World Music Festival, blending
musical traditions with environmental advocacy, more and more concert productions, recording
studios, and festivals are implementing eco-conscious measures. Beyond the stage, the
Philippines is also echoing its commitment to conservation. The Department of Environment and
Natural Resources (DENR) of the Philippines’ “KANTALIKASAN” album celebrates winning

environmental songs, while Lio Beach Fest in Palawan celebrates environmental awareness,
harmonizing vibrant performances and conservation efforts.
Driven by a shared concern for the climate crisis, 13 leading Indonesian musicians also recently
came together to form IKLIM ‘the Indonesian Knowledge, Climate, Arts and Music Lab’. These
artists of various genres such as Endah N Rhesa, Iga Massardi, Navicula Tony Q Rastafara,
and others gathered in Bali earlier this year to gain a deep understanding about the causes of
climate change, what needs to be done to reduce carbon emissions and how music and art can
be powerful tools for climate action. Their collaboration resulted in the ‘sonic/panic’ compilation
album, released under Alarm Records, Indonesia’s first environmentally conscious record label.
The album’s diverse genres unite under a common cause: the urgent call for climate action.
To celebrate the album’s release on major digital platforms, the IKLIM Fest was held in Ubud on
November 4, 2023. This event marked the first climate-conscious festival in Indonesia that
implemented a ‘Reuse Protocol’ by Dietplastik Indonesia to reduce the large amounts of single-
use waste typically generated at music festivals.
Gede Robi, vocalist and guitarist of Navicula, and a driving force behind IKLIM, said “Until now,
there was no collective movement that united Indonesian musicians around the climate crisis.
We are inspired by the global Music Declares Emergency movement, and aspire to encourage
musicians across the Asian region to join us in taking climate action.”
Furthermore, Robi outlined IKLIM’s plans to broaden its reach by collaborating with more
musicians and industry professionals across Indonesia and is currently actively promoting the
joint movement among musicians in the Philippines, Bhutan, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia and
South Korea.
“The ultimate objective,” Robi elaborated, “is to promote sustainability within the music industry.
IKLIM functions as a think-tank for making music more environmentally sustainable. As we
continue to engage with industry stakeholders, our knowledge and experience will grow,
enabling us to develop best practices for reducing the music industry’s carbon emissions. This,
in turn, will empower musicians to play a more active role in both raising awareness and
mitigating the impact of the climate crisis.”

Charting a Path Forward
While challenges persist, which include limited knowledge and access to environmentally
friendly solutions within the music industry, Robi believes that as more musicians and industry
players join this collective effort, more solutions will emerge.
The establishment of Music Declares Emergency Indonesia, the first chapter of the global
movement in Asia is an extension of the global movement that unites musicians, industry
professionals and music lovers, and transcends genres and borders to take a collective stand
around the climate crisis.

As sustainable practices become integrated into Asia’s music industry, musicians in the region
can set a standard for responsible entertainment. “The climate crisis has now taken center
stage for our generation, and the movement’s success hinges on collaboration, especially
among industry stakeholders. We envision that our current efforts will serve as a blueprint for
something much bigger in the future.”
